摘要
Maternal behavior in rats is a highly motivated and well-organized social behavior. It appears naturally at birth under the influence of hormones, without prior experience and training, and persists for 3-4 weeks under the influence of the maternal experience acquired through the interaction with the young. It is an ecologically valid animal model for the study of motor function, emotion, motivation, reward processing, learning and memory. In this talk, I will briefly describe the basic characteristics of rat maternal behavior and summarize important changes in psychological functions associated with maternal experience. Next, I will describe our recent work on the roles of dopamine and serotonin in the mediation of maternal behavior. I will focus on the two serotoninergic receptor systems (5-HT2A and 5-HT2C) and discuss the possible clinical implication of this work.
